Max Talley was born in New York, and received a BA in literature from a liberal arts college. His father was an editor, and his mother was a businesswoman and writer, so he grew up surrounded by books. Talley wrote weekly columns for the Carmel Valley Sun in the late 1990’s, as well as The Rogue Voice of San Luis Obispo from 2007 to 2009. He won awards at Santa Barbara Writers Conference in 2006 and 2007 for fiction in the horror/sci-fi/fantasy category. His story “Poisoned” appeared in Iconoclast magazine in 2007. Talley’s dystopian near future thriller Yesterday We Forget Tomorrow was published by Damnation Books in 2014. Talley’s curated anthology Delirium Corridor debuted in December 2020. It includes two of his stories, his cover & interior artwork, and twelve other excellent writers. Talley’s literary fiction collection, My Secret Place, came out from Main Street Rag Books in 2022 and When The Night Breathes Electric debuted in 2023 from Noleta Press/SBLJ Books. his 3rd collection, Destroy Me Gently, Please was published by Serving House Books in spring 2025, followed by Peace, Love & Haight.

Since 2014, Talley’s stories have appeared in Two Cities Review, Iconoclast, Chantwood, The Opiate, Fiction Southeast, Hofstra University – Windmill, two Hardboiled anthologies, Del Sol Review, Broke Bohemian, Thoughtful Dog, Bull & Cross, Black Dandy, Devolution Z, The Gateway Review, & Gold Man Review.
